I completely agree with never leaving your dog in the car, so I just take him in with me! At only 5.5 lbs, my dog rides in my purse wherever I go. And if I'm going to the grocery store or a restaurant, I've got a satin scarf I cover his face with, and voila! It just looks like i've got a scarf draping out of my purse. But I also knew from the beginning that being able to do this would entail strict, rigorous training on my part. My dog doesn't bark, whine, or whimper unless directed. He will wait patiently in my bag until I tell him to get out. Until then, he's quietly in the purse, and nobody's the wiser. (Booth seats in the restaurants work great! Nobody can see him!) So if you're dog's small enough to do it, definitely invest the time and effort into making him/her into a well-trained dog and you can tag him along wherever you go too without fear of him being stolen.

It's illegal where I live to leave a dog in a car. If found, police will break your car window to get it out and call the human society. You are in big trouble.......

My neighbour had her St Bernard stolen from her back yard. She had left the dogs loose in the garden while she popped to the shops. When she came back the dog had gone and the gate was open. The gate had been bolted from the inside but the thieves just reached over and released the bolt. Luckily another person saw the dog being bundled into a car and took the registration number. Hopefully the police will be able to trace the dog. It seems that it is not just from the car that dogs are stolen. I have heard that someone had her sheltie taken from her whilst out walking in a local park. With pedigree dogs fetching such high prices nowdays they have become a profitable business for thieves.

Yup, i agree that's a very good practice. If i have to leave my dog in the car, I'll make sure it is not more than 3 min, still it is not safe. So i try not to do that unless I really have no choice because in my country we are not allow to bring your dog everywhere you go.
Just a year ago, my friend pug got stolen because the maid left the door open without knowing it. We tried look around but couldn't find him. It was really sad.

That's a very good practice! I won't leave my dogs in the car either- I would feel horrible if someone stole them, or if something happened to them. Around here small dogs are stolen to use as bate for fighting dogs!!! My Byrdie has been attacked by larger dogs so many times (no injuries- thank doG), she is now afraid of any approaching larger or same size dog.
You are absolutely right about the temps in a car even on a cool day- they can get dangerously hot very quickly, and it's easy for a dog to get overheated.

I love the pic of you and your dog in the top right! Little dogs are easier to carry away, for sure. Mine, at 60ish pounds, are harder!
